- Ohio, USA -
On Monday, October 26, 54-year-old CASSANDRA SMITH (pictured below), was found guilty of starving a dog so badly that she had to be euthanized.
SMITH pleaded no contest to one count of cruelty to companion animals, a fifth-degree felony charge.
Assistant Allen County Prosecutor Tony Miller said the state did not offer the defendant the chance to change her plea.
The charge refers to a heartbreaking incident dated July 3, 2020, when a female black Labrador was removed from SMITH’s residence and was rushed to the Kessen Veterinary Clinic in Delphos.
Ohio SPCA named the furbaby Daisy Mae.
Daisy Mae was a skeleton weighing only 33-pounds against a 60-pounds weight of a healthy dog.
Allen County Chief Humane Agent Nick Marando said: “She was so dehydrated that the veterinarian could not draw blood from her veins.”
As you can imagine, in cases like this one, around-the-clock care with fluids and small meals is required.
All parties involved in saving that life hope and pray that the precious soul will pull through and get a second chance.
While Daisy Mae started gaining weight, on July 12, she had to be euthanized.
Jason Asaro, Ohio SPCA shelter manager said: “We really thought this sweet dog was going to make it. Losing her is just so heartbreaking.”
CASSANDRA SMITH was arrested on August 16, 2020.
She then posted bond and was released on August 20.
SMITH will be sentenced on November 30.
She faces only up to 12 months in prison, but according to News Break, she is expected to be sentenced to some form of community control instead.
