Police say that 79-year-old DEAN WOODYATT (pictured below), of Shalimar, chained his German Shepherd to a golf cart dragging him and ultimately killing him.
The incident happened on Saturday, April 25, near Eglin Parkway and Highway Avenue.
Motorists honked and urged WOODYATT to stop; however, he ignored them.
The poor furbaby eventually collapsed but, WOODYATT kept going and, a witness had to chase him to get him to stop.
Fort Walton Beach police report says that it’s unclear for how long the abuse went on.
When police arrived, the dog was struggling to breathe and had multiple injuries to his feet.
WOODYATT tried to flee by grabbing the leash and jumping back into the golf cart and refused to comply with officers’ orders.
Officers had to pry the chain out of his hands, and he physically resisted by holding onto the golf cart.
Eventually, WOODYATT was taken into custody and charged with animal cruelty and charges for resisting arrest.
He was booked into the Okaloosa County Jail.
Police called in Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
PAWS Interim Executive Director Melissa Forberg responded to the incident and transported the lifeless pup to the PAWS veterinary clinic for a necropsy.
The results revealed that the pup died of heat-related injuries.
Temperatures Saturday were in the high 70s.
Ms. Forberg said: “Animal cruelty is never acceptable in a civilized society.”
PAWS is pursuing all applicable charges.
