On July 20, South Charleston Police were called to a home in the 1200 block of E. Village Drive in South Charleston for a welfare check.
Captain Pat Rader told WSAZ that officers talked to 20-year-old GABRIEL MATTHEW KEKEL (pictured below) outside the residence.
Cpt. Rader said: “Our officers (and Kekel) started talking (and) they exhibited some fairly erratic behavior. He didn’t seem like he was all there, so they brought him in to talk to him (more), to make sure he was OK (and) he started disclosing some things that were fairly bizarre, stuff you read about or maybe see in a movie.”
Police said KEKEL told them he overdosed his cat and when he knew the cat was dead, he used a machete to behead the furbaby.
As if that was not sick and cruel enough, he then proceeded to dismember his/her small body.
WSET reports that KEKEL allowed officers inside his home, “pulled down a ladder to the attic and brought down three jars that contained a cat's head, a bird skull, and a squirrel's leg, along with other animal bones.”
WSET further reports that after his arrest, KEKEL told police during an interview at the station that he had killed and dissected several other animals, which gave him an adrenaline rush.
The search warrant stated: “Kekel also spoke about his fantasies of killing people and went into specific detail about how he would use a stun gun and make sure the person would not scream and then use the paracord to strangle the person. Kekel then stated he would dismember the torso and use the skull for DIY projects.”
The sick murderer has been charged with cruelty to animals.
As reported by WSAZ, police said probable cause was found at his preliminary hearing and his case now goes to a Kanawha County grand jury for a possible indictment of several charges of animal cruelty.
Online records show KEKEL is at South Central Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond.
