On April 1, in a Facebook post the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors wrote that “In a span of three days, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital has received three patients with air rifle pellets lodged in their bodies.”
One of them is the common brushtail possum who was found in Little Mountain.
The little mama, named Bonnie, was taken to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for a skin infection and eye injury. “An x-ray confirmed that she had three pellets embedded, with one completely shattered around the bone,” explained Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors.
Mama Bonnie had to undergo surgery.
The organization also said that mama Bonnie was carrying her joey whom they have named Jella.
An encouraging update was posted on April 7, when Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors advised that mama Bonnie was still at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital’s ICU and was recovering from the three air rifle pellets found in her body. The organization said Bonnie “has been a fighter” and an amazing mom to her baby Jella.
Dr. Ludo Valenza, veterinarian at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital said that when they get “situations like this where an animal has been purposely injured, it’s absolutely devastating for us to see.”
An investigation has been launched and Dr. Valenza hopes that their partnership with Crimestoppers Queensland will not only assist them further to protect the native wildlife, but to find those responsible for these heinous crimes.
A reward is being offered for information leading to the prosecution of those responsible.
