On Thursday, June 22, 2023, Property Crime detectives from San Antonio Police Department West Patrol arrested 28-years-old JOHN CHRISTOPHER SCHAFER (pictured) for animal cruelty.
San Antonio Police said in a news release that on April 27, 2023, officers responded to a disturbance report at the 200 block of Coopwood Avenue. According to the release, during the disturbance, SCHAFER threatened to injure a dog, a young male American Stafford Terrier. Police said SCHAFER “proceeded to stab the dog in the neck with a box cutter knife” and then fled the scene.
Responding officers found the injured dog and notified City of San Antonio Animal Care Services.
In a Facebook post, the agency said that the furbaby “was brought into the Animal Care Services Veterinary Clinic with a deep puncture in the left side of his neck. After extensive treatment, the dog, now dubbed ‘Zander,’ was fostered by a pair of ACS officers until he found an adoptive home where he currently lives with several other animal companions.”
Police said SCHAFER is facing a third-degree felony charge of Animal Cruelty-Torture punishable by up to ten years in prison and/or a fine up to $10,000.
KSAT.com published the video of the press conference held by City of San Antonio Animal Care Services. Officials said if Zander had not been found on time and brought in as quickly as he was, he would have died from blood loss.
Online court records show that SCHAFER's pre-hearing is set for August 2, 2023, at Bexar County District Court.
