36-year-old JOHN MICHAEL MITCHELL (pictured below), of Gainesville, was arrested for kicking and shooting a dog multiple times leading to the furbaby’s death.
On Tuesday, September 8, deputies with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed disturbance at a home on 6334 of Southwest 59th Street.
They learned from the dog’s guardian that he heard his dog, a Red Nose Pitbull, barking in the backyard and went outside to check on him.
He saw a jogger, later identified as MITCHELL, kicking the dog through the chain-link fence. MITCHELL then pulled out a handgun and started shooting at the Pitbull.
The poor dog collapsed to the ground after running away from the gun.
The Gainesville Sun reports that detectives who responded to the scene, drove through the area to look for the suspect matching the description giving by the dog’s guardian.
Thankfully, a pedestrian told detectives they saw the suspect running inside a home less than a mile southeast of the scene.
When MITCHELL was located, he “made the spontaneous statement” that he shot the dog.
Alachua Sheriff’s Officials said that MITCHELL said he was jogging with headphones on and the dog scared him.
JOHN MICHAEL MITCHELL was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and discharging a firearm in public onto a residential property.
He was booked in the Alachua County Jail.
At his first court appearance, the day after his arrest, bail was set at $20,000.
Stacy Scott, Alachua County’s Public Defender, said that there is always more to a story than appears in an initial police report.
Well, no matter what the details are, NOTHING justifies the killing of an innocent animal!!!
I personally find lawyers of animal abusers to be very pathetic!
