On Monday, October 18, Iredell County Sheriff Deputies arrested 38-years-old JUSTIN NATHANIEL DEATON and 51-years-old PEGGY SUE JENKINS (both pictured below).
Deputies Goforth and Kent were following up a Crime Stoppers tip on Bell Farm Road, and as they were turning onto Dogwood Estates Circle, Deputy Goforth saw a Ford Explorer traveling towards him. Deputy Goforth recognized the driver, DEATON, as he knew that DEATON had active outstanding arrest warrants. JENKINS was inside the vehicle.
Deputy Goforth’s attempt to stop DEATON’s vehicle failed and a chase began.
DEATON’s Explorer eventually ran into a large field and became stuck. JENKINS remained in the vehicle. DEATON tried to flee on foot and Deputy Goforth deployed his K-9 Officer Binji who successfully captured DEATON.
DEATON and JENKINS, both of Calvin Street in Mocksville, were arrested on animal cruelty charges among others.
FOX 46 Charlotte reports that JENKINS was charged with four counts of cruelty to animals and four counts of misdemeanor abandonment of animals. Bond was set at $4,500.
DEATON was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where he was charged with eight counts of misdemeanor abandonment of animals, cruelty to animals, felony flee to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger, failure to stop at a stop sign, felony conspire to traffic methamphetamine, felony probation violation, and driving while license revoked. Bond was set at $325,500.
The sheriff’s office did not reveal details about the animals involved.
DEATON is scheduled to appear in District Court in Davie County on October 21, 2021.
He also scheduled to appear in Iredell County on November 9, 2021.
JENKINS has a District Court date in Davie County on October 28, 2021.
