Volusia County Sheriff deputies arrested 27-year-old MELISSA CROOKER (pictured below), for animal cruelty.
On the evening of Saturday, December 26, the vehicle that CROOKER was driving, a Volkswagen Beetle, left a known drug house at 109 Broderick St. in DeLeon Springs and deputies attempted to stop her but failed to catch up with her.
Eventually, when CROOKER turned onto Carr Street which is a dead-end, she exited the vehicle and ran through the woods.
When deputies searched CROOKER’s vehicle they discovered a kitten inside.
News-Journal reports that CROOKER said she was homeless, and the kitten was hers.
News-Journal does not mention whether the furbaby was injured or had been abused, authorities simply said that the kitten was taken by Volusia County Animal Control Services.
CROOKER was being held Monday at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $31,000 bail.
