A male whom Local 12 identified as NICK STEWART, was caught on camera tossing a dog in a dumpster as if he was getting rid of unwanted and useless items!
It’s unclear why the authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s name and mugshot at this time!
The incident happened on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, off Shaker Run Road in the Webster Green subdivision of Peebles in Adams County.
Ms. Ashley Nesbitt told news outlets that it was her husband who discovered the dog, a 9-year-old male Chihuahua who also had a “zip-tie” around his throat. Some news agencies referred to the furbaby as Ollie and others as Oliver.
Ms. Nesbitt recounted on her Facebook post that on Wednesday afternoon, her husband “had taken boxes to the dumpster and heard heavy, gasping breaths. He immediately jumped into the dumpster (which thankfully was mostly empty) and found the bag moving. He ripped it open and saw one of the worst things a person could ever imagine seeing.”
Ms. Nesbitt went on to say that her husband ran to the nearest neighbor’s house and used their garden hose to cool down the furbaby and then proceeded to cut the “zip-tie” off his throat.
Adams County Dog Warden Donnie Swayne responded to the scene and took custody of the dog.
Ms. Nesbitt explained that “After spending hours sifting through our outside camera video footage, my husband and our property manager found the man responsible for such a heinous crime. He is a local resident.”
Peebles Police Chief Matthew Windle told WLWT5: “I know a lot of people’s been, has been kind of up in arms about it. There’s been a lot of social media about the dog. It was a tragic thing. Luckily, the dog’s okay.” Chief Windle then clarified that it wasn’t a “zip-tie” around the dog’s throat, but a flea collar, and that “The individual that this happened with was the boyfriend of the actual owner of the dog.”
Ms. Nesbitt said the dog was lethargic, he was not moving, he was malnourished and had cuts on his neck. Swayne said that a veterinarian verified the redness was the result of a thick collar.
For now, the furbaby is in the care of the Adams County Dog Warden and on June 8, 2023, they wrote in Facebook post: “Update on the dog found in dumpster the dog is doing well and will remain at the Adams County kennel until the case has been to court.”
Here is the bad news, the Voiceless Victim may go back to STEWART, the monster who threw this precious life in a dumpster!
STEWART told Local 12 that his family is in the process of moving and that accidentally, he tripped over the dog. He thought he had killed the dog which is why he put the dog in the trash bag.
In a pathetic statement, STEWART said: “I understand I didn’t handle it the correct way. Like I said, I used poor judgement. Just in the moment I wasn't thinking clearly.”
Swayne is having a hard time understanding why STEWART did this and told WKRC: “He’s been well taken care of up to the point he’d been in the dumpster. Like I said, he’s up to the weight he should be. He’s a neutered male. So, the owners have taken care of him in the past, so we don’t know what led up to the incident yesterday.”
With all due respect, the fact that the furbaby was neutered does not prove that he was very well taken care of. It’s also possible that he was neutered before he went into that family!
On Wednesday, Chief Windle charged STEWART with one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, first-degree. He is due in Peebles' Mayor's Court on June 21, 2023.
Now, it’s up to the judge to decide where the Voiceless Victim will go.
