The Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 37-year-old ROBERT JAMES LUTHER III (pictured), of Bonita Springs.
On March 13, 2025, deputies were called to a home in the 25000 block of Carnoustie Court after the homeowner made a “disturbing discovery”, stated the release by the sheriff’s office.
The homeowner found a box on top of their mailbox containing two severed cat heads.
Due to the nature of the incident, the sheriff’s office Animal Cruelty Task Force was called to assist detectives on the scene and an investigation established LUTHER as a potential suspect.
According to the press release, state-of-the art technology, including license plate readers was used to examine the scene, and detectives were able to establish LUTHER “was in the area where the crime was committed around the same time.”
Later that day, LUTHER was located fishing in the area of Corporation Circle behind a closed business. The sheriff’s office said LUTHER “invoked his rights” and refused to speak with detectives while being questioned.
Detectives, however, found further evidence linking LUTHER to the crime, including “disturbing cell phone videos” in which LUTHER “[makes] mention” of and “depicts” the deceased cats.
LUTHER was booked into the Lee County Jail on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated stalking.
At the time of writing, online records show that the murderer is still in custody and is scheduled to be in court on April 14, 2025, at 8:30 a.m..
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said: “Heinous violent acts, especially toward innocent animals, is beyond unacceptable and any offender will face severe consequences to the fullest extent of the law. The combined efforts of multiple units ensured this sick individual got locked behind bars before he could hurt anyone else. From the initial call taken by dispatchers, to the investigative work performed by 4th Precinct Patrol Deputies and Crime Section Detectives and the Animal Cruelty Task Force—this outcome was a success!”
