Miller’s mom, Kacy Carnicelli, kindly provided me with Miller’s pictures which have been added to the gallery below.

Kacy tells me that Miller is back home and is recovering well.

Kacy explained that Miller “had 2 bullet wounds to his left shoulder with multiple fragments throughout his shoulder and soft tissue. Small fragments in his lung field. He had [pneumothorax] and lung contusions from the bullet wound. He is very sore. But such a loving soul. He is determined to get through this.”

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrested 65-years-old SHELDON KEITH HAYWARD (pictured) after he admitted to shooting at his neighbor’s two dogs killing one of them.

According to the affidavit obtained by Voice For Us, on Saturday, July 22, 2023, shortly before 9:00 p.m. deputies were dispatched to Holopaw Trail in Sorrento after one of HAYWARD’s neighbors had reported that HAYWARD had shot her dogs, Mary and Miller, causing the death of one of them.

The lady explained to deputies that she had let Mary and Miller out in her backyard and that she did not realize the gate was open. She went on to say that when her daughter went to look for the dogs, who apparently escaped through the gate, she found Mary about five feet from the road lifeless. Mary had a gunshot wound to her head. Miller, a service dog, was also found near the road after being shot.

The lady and her husband went to recover Miller’s body and according to the affidavit, HAYWARD pointed a gun at them. The husband then took Miller to an animal hospital.

When responding deputies went over to HAYWARD’s home, as they walked up to his driveway, they saw a pool of blood “within seven steps from the road.” Then, one of the deputies walked to the gate and HAYWARD stepped out of the home. He claimed that “a group of dogs came over and were aggressive.” HAYWARD told the deputy that one of the dogs jumped on his fence but “did not [growl] or bark at him.” HAYWARD went on to say that he tried to scare the dogs with a shovel but they did not leave. HAYWARD then took his newly purchased rifle and shot at the dogs from his porch approximately five times.

One of the deputies wrote in his report: “I believe the defendant was not in imminent danger and it was not necessary to repeatedly shoot the animals causing unnecessary pain to one and death to the other.”

HAYWARD was arrested for two counts of animal cruelty and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was transported to Lake County Jail and records show he is being held on $150,000 bond.

According to court records, HAYWARD’s arraignment is set for August 14, 2023, at 8:30 a.m.

A GoFundMe has been set up to raise money to help toward Miller’s medical care.
