On the morning of Monday, March 7, deputies with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence in the 7200 block of Mountain View Road in response to a fire.
In a news release the sheriff’s office said that upon arrival, deputies made contact with the person who had made the call.
The caller told deputies that they saw 37-years-old STEVEN EDWARD COLLINS (pictured below) on the porch of the residence before the fire started.
The witness further stated that COLLINS “had lit a cardboard box on fire, which then ignited the residence.”
COLLINS then left the residence on foot and headed into the desert area near the property.
After the fire was put out, firefighters with Mohave Valley Fire Department found two deceased cats inside the residence, and a third cat hiding under the home.
Meanwhile more deputies arrived on scene and began searching the desert for COLLINS.
He was located a short time later and taken into custody.
The sheriff’s office said that COLLINS refused to speak to deputies and was transported to Valley View Hospital for a medical evaluation. Once cleared by medical, he was transported to the Adult Detention Facility in Kingman.
COLLINS is s facing felony charges of arson, two counts of animal cruelty, killing a domestic animal without consent, and endangerment.
