A video has emerged on social media showing an off-duty cop, Senior Community Constable, WAYLON JOHNCOCK, getting out of a car, chasing after a defenseless wombat and throwing rocks at the poor animal’s head.

All the news outlets I came across have described the footage to be sickening.

The one included in this article has been edited due to the distressing nature of the images.

7news.com.au reports that police have launched an internal investigation and that SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said: “I can confirm that we're investigating it and it will be dealt with as a disciplinary matter." He added: "If there are any [offenses] committed they'll also be investigated and dealt with as they would for any other person.”

The poor wombat was left there to suffer. He did not die right away.

The video was sent on Wednesday night, October 2, to the local rescue wombat group ‘Wombat Awareness Organization’. Brigitte Stevens, with the organization, said: “I’m just devastated, knowing how sensitive and how kind these animals are.” “I just pray that he didn’t suffer too much.”
