On Tuesday, December 6, 2022, the Laurel Police Department arrested 50-years-old WILLIE EARL HATTEN (pictured) and charged him with four counts of aggravated cruelty to a dog and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The arrest follows a search warrant obtained by LPD and executed at HATTEN’s residence at the 1100 block of Purvis Street on suspicion of drug activity.
The narcotics unit did not find any drugs, however, officials discovered deceased dogs and weapons.
Reportedly, the dogs died of neglect and had died before police received a tip.
I have emailed Laurel Police Department Chief Tommy Cox and requested additional information about the dogs. Hopefully, I will have more details for you.
The animal cruelty charges that HATTEN is facing, are related to an earlier case which is still being investigated.
HATTEN faced Judge Kyle Robertson at Laurel Municipal Court on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, and bond was set at $5,000. Online records show that HATTEN was released from the Jones County Adult Detention Center on the morning of Thursday, December 8, 2022, after posting bond.
