On November 19, 2024, deputies with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office along with Animal Enforcement Officer Rowe responded to an address in eastern Brooksville after receiving a complaint of animal cruelty, involving two dogs, which was captured on video.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a witness who said that two dogs “had been beaten by their owner on multiple occasions”, stated the media release by the sheriff’s office.

The witness was able to show officers a video depicting some of the abuse inflicted upon the defenseless dogs.

The 45-minute video showed 57-year-old JOSEPH LEE LAMONTAGNE (pictured), “repeatedly punching, kicking, and striking both dogs with what appeared to be metal objects consistent with both a metal pole and metal pan.”

The sheriff's office identified the furvictims as a female Cane Corso named Hailie and a male Cane Corso named Alger.

Officers could hear Hailie and Alger whimpering in pain while trying to escape the brutal attacks. However, LAMONTAGNE “would drag the dogs back and begin beating them over and over again”, said the sheriff’s office.

At one point, the video showed LAMONTAGNE beating Alger while the helpless soul was tethered to a post unable to escape.

After contacting Hernando County Animal Services, officers learned that LAMONTAGNE had adopted Alger and on November 5, 2024, he even requested to foster Hailie.

The sheriff’s office said: “Thankfully, Lamontagne only had possession of the dogs for 14 days.”

Still, those innocent souls were left in the hands of that savage and NO animals should suffer, not even for a second!

Officers then made contact with LAMONTAGNE at his residence and in the backyard, they found Hailie and Alger with no food, water, or shelter.

Animal Enforcement Officer Rowe took custody of the Voiceless Victims. As she was putting them into the transport vehicle, she noticed that Alger “walked with a severe limp to his right front leg.” LAMONTAGNE surrendered Alger.

I have emailed the sheriff’s office to inquire about the furbabies’ well-being and if I get a response I will post an update.

LAMONTAGNE was arrested at the scene and charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty.

The savage admitted to hitting Hailie and Alger with a leash due to their “previous actions”, stated the release. However, despite video evidence, he denied ever kicking, punching, or striking the dogs with a metal object.

At the time of writing, online arrest records show that the savage is being held into the Hernando County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.

As explained in the release, the County Attorney’s Office is being consulted regarding a petition to determine fitness, which may result in LAMONTAGNE’s “ability to own animals in the future.”

I think lifetime banning should be applied automatically to animal abusers!

In a statement, Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said: “Felony animal cruelty is not just a crime against an individual animal—it’s a crime against our community’s values. The severity of these offenses cannot be overstated. Inflicting pain and suffering on innocent creatures is a clear indication of a deep disregard for life itself. As sheriff, I am committed to holding perpetrators accountable to the fullest extent of the law, because such cruelty has no place in a just society. We must take a firm stand against those who harm animals, ensuring that the punishment fits the gravity of their actions.”

The Columbia Police Department (CPD) said that a concerned citizen saw a dog wandering the area of Corola Avenue near North Main Street with a collar embedded in his neck and called 9-1-1 for help.

Following the request for help, City of Columbia Animal Control officers responded to the area and found the dog, a Cane Corso named Banx. Animal Control then called in CPD for assistance and Banx was immediately taken to a veterinarian.

As stated in a press release by CPD, “In a 17-page report of exam findings, Banxsuffered unnecessary pain and suffering’.” The veterinarian further determined that Banx was “emaciated” weighing 88 pounds. Banx’s body’s condition scored 2 out of 9 on the Purina Body Condition Scale. The veterinarian reported that Banx “had a flea and hookworm infestation, anemia, worn teeth, plus, significant scarring and inflammation of the neck due to the embedded collar,” said police. Banx required surgery to remove the collar and to treat the injuries on his neck. The good news is that he is on the mend while his medical care continues.

The Columbia Police Department said that 32-years-old AIREAL TANAI AMES (pictured), is accused of failing to properly care for Banx.

AMES turned herself in to Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers on the morning of Wednesday, April 26, 2023. She is charged with Felony Ill Treatment of Animals.

AMES was released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center after posting a meager $1,000 bond.

Online court records show that AMES is due back in Columbia Municipal Court on May 26, 2023.

~ Update: September 17, 2022

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office announced that during the ongoing investigation, detectives “were able to establish sufficient probable cause in obtaining an additional arrest warrant for” 52-years-old TINA BRIMER FREY (pictured), for one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post that upon obtaining the arrest warrant, FREY’s attorney, Mike Small, was notified and he advised he would accompany his client to the Rapides Parish Courthouse to turn herself in.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 14, 2022, FREY was placed under arrest and booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center from which she was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Around and around we go. She’ll probably be arrested again and released again.

I don’t understand why animal abusers are not kept in jail until trial!

The investigation is very much active and ongoing. The sheriff’s office even said “additional arrests are possible.”

~ Original story:

On Thursday, August 11, 2022, detectives with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into complaints of videos circulating on social media showing dogs being abused at the Cypress Arrow Kennel & K9 Academy in Lena.

In a press release, the sheriff’s office specifically referred to a video in which a dog trainer at the aforementioned facility can be seen striking a Cane Corso dog on the head with a riding crop.

The investigation verified the validity of the video and “established sufficient probable cause that supported the original complaint”, said the sheriff’s office.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of the owner of Cypress Arrow Kennel & K9 Academy, 52-years-old TINA BRIMER FREY and her daughter 21 VICTORIA ELIZABETH BRIMER (both pictured).

News Channel 5 spoke to multiple guardians of the dogs shown in the videos who said they were contacted anonymously by someone at the facility and sent the videos.

One of the videos shows a Cane Corso named Fenixx being pulled from two sides with leashes while she was continuously hit with an object.

Mother and daughter turned themselves in and were taken into custody on Thursday, August 18, 2022, on two Felony counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals. The duo were released after posting a $10,000 bond each.

In a Facebook statement of August 17, 2022, Rapides Parish Sheriff Mark Wood said: “I want the public to know that we understand this case surrounding Cypress Arrow Kennels has gained a lot of media and attention. We also understand that watching the videos is both heart breaking and disturbing for people to watch.

I want the public to know that this is a very high case and is on the top of our agenda. Although because it is an ongoing investigation there is only so much that I can speak on but I can say one thing, I promise you all that this is not going to be swept under the rug and will be handled in a very serious and professional manner.

There is a certain small group of people who are trying to again spin this for their political agenda and sadly they will continue to do so on every case that arises in our future.”

News Channel 5 reports that FREY’s defense attorney, Bradley Drell, “has released a statement on the animal abuse allegations surrounding the Lena training facility.”

In his statement, Drell claimed that his client is “innocent of any claim of animal cruelty” and said the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is going “overboard” in its investigation.

News Channel 5 further reports that Drell claimed that the video recorded at the Cypress Arrow Kennel & K9 Academy were “surreptitiously created by an employee who circulated these videos almost one week after she was terminated from Cypress Arrow on August 4.”

Drell added: “Revenge for her firing seems to be this former employee’s primary motivation in releasing these videos and in contacting clients of Cypress Arrow.”

I struggle to comprehend how Drell, after watching the same videos that I have watched, maintains his client's innocence!!!!

Detectives say this is still a very active and ongoing investigation and more charges are possible as the investigation continues.
