The Fairmont Police Department arrested 20-years-old MALAKI DAWONE RICHARDSON (pictured), of Clarksburg.

The Fairmont Police Department tells me that on September 5, 2023, a 911 call reported a male, later identified as RICHARDSON, beating his two dogs. In the email, Police identified the two dogs as Queen and her brother, an 8-10-week-old Boxer named King.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment on Locust Avenue but when they arrived RICHARDSON had already left the apartment with the dogs.

The reporting party told officers that “the brown dog appeared to be barely breathing, completely limp, and had blood coming out of [its] mouth with [its] tongue hanging out the side.”

Officers were told by the apartment’s manager that dogs were not allowed in the complex.

Police were able to enter RICHARDSON’s apartment and saw “puppy pee pads with blood on them.”

Another witness told officers that RICHARDSON was punching King, that he would “usually” whip him and that “the whippings started to get worse.” According to WDTV, the same witness also told Police that RICHARDSON “beat the dog until it was literally dead,” and added that he then “started to rub the dog’s stomach to bring it back to life.”

Naturally, after hearing about all the cruel and barbaric abuse inflicted upon a small, defenseless creature, officers thought King was dead. Thankfully, Police located RICHARDSON and King at Hickman Run Animal Hospital.

RICHARDSON was placed under arrest on the scene. He justified his savagery by saying that King had torn up the bathroom. RICHARDSON described the gory details of how he raged against King. RICHARDSON said that he grabbed King by the scruff of the neck and “beat its ass.” RICHARDON further admitted to holding King up in the air while hitting him repeatedly in the front leg area.

RICHARDSON is facing cruelty to animals charges and according to arrest records, he is being held at North Central Regional Jail on a $40,512 bond.

The Voiceless Victims were seized by Marion County Animal Control. Queen “appeared to be small, trembling, and in fear”, said Police.

Fairmont Police tell me that they followed up with one of the veterinarians and learned that King has been renamed Hercules. Hercules, as you can imagine, has sustained serious injuries. Police tell me the vet “indicated that injuries included 3 broken spinal processes; Head trauma to include swelling, bruising, and bloody eyes.”

Fairmont Police underlined the “great job” of the Marion County Animal Control and their Officer Greynolds in this case. Police tell me Officer Greynolds met with officers at the animal hospital when he took custody of Queen. Additionally, Officer Greynolds “facilitated the care for Hercules by transporting him back and forth between the Original Veterinary clinic and our Emergency Vet Clinic (Hercules needed around the clock care/monitoring that necessitated his transfer to different vets to afford this level of care). The Doctors were great!”

Fairmont Police are continuing to gather evidence in this case.

Meanwhile, Marion County West Virginia Humane Society - No Kill Shelter advised that both furvictims are now in their care and Queen has been renamed Artemis.

I cannot begin to tell you how desperately the nonprofit needs donations to face the medical bills of the furvictims in their care. If you wish, and can afford to help out, please click here. Thank you!

RICHARDSON, you ignorant savage! Is that how your mama treated you as a child every time you did something that you were not supposed to do? Do you think that the law should show you any compassion? Your logic should be applied to you! You deserve a good beating!

~ Update: January 10, 2023

The Fairmont Police Department kindly responded to my email and I am now able to add a few details to the story.

The VOICELESS VICTIM is a 9-month-old Lab mix named Luna and Police provided me with her picture.

MASTERS’ relatives told police he was Luna’s guardian.

The day MASTERS was arrested, Marion County Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of the furbaby.

Part of the officer’s narrative emailed to me read: “While inspecting the dog for any apparent wounds I observed where the white of the dog's eyes were red. I took photographs of the dog and the redness within its eye, these photos will be attached. After seeing the abnormal red color in the dog's eyes I took the dog out to my patrol car and transported her to xxxxxxxxxxx to have the dog evaluated. Upon arrival I made contact with the medical staff at the clinic and advised them of the situation. The doctor evaluated the dog and had stated that she observed inflammation/faint bruising in both of the dog's eyes. I asked the Veterinarian what the redness would be caused from to which she sated that it was caused by either blunt force trauma or an infection within the eyes. The Veterinarian stated that based on the time line of events it is very likely that the inflammation/bruising was caused by abuse.”

I have also inquired about MASTERS’ arraignment and learned he was arraigned and a $3,000 bond was set by magistrate. Police further told me that MASTERS is requesting a bond reduction. I will try again to access his court records and gather more information.

~ Original story:

The Fairmont Police Department arrested 22-years-old LUKE MATTHEW MASTERS (pictured), of Mannington, for beating and kicking a defenseless dog.

On January 7, 2023, officers responded to an animal abuse complaint at a home in Fairmont, Marion County and learned that MASTERS had punched a black Labrador Retriever in the head and had kicked the furbaby “in the guts” multiple times over a four-day period.

From an initial investigation it further emerged that at one point MASTERS had also pinned the VOICELESS VICTIM to the floor with his foot to the dog’s head.

Police said that while officers were on the scene, the furbaby was “shaking non-stop, put its paw up in fear of being struck, and had a redness in the white of its eyes.”

The veterinarian who examined the dog told police that the furbaby had “inflammation/faint bruising on both eyes caused by blunt force trauma to its head or an infection which is why the dog’s eyes were red.”

Police have not disclosed details about the dog’s well-being.

MASTERS has been charged with cruelty to animals and is being held in the North Central Regional Jail.

On Wednesday, August 31, 2022, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous call reporting that two horses had been starving at a property in the 16600 block of the southwest 42nd Loop.

Responding deputies found an 8-year-old Chestnut Quarter Horse mare named Cinnamon and an 18-year-old Old Bay Thoroughbred mare named Broadway, who were severely malnourished.

In a press release, the sheriff’s office said that Corporal Struble, Corporal James Manning, and Marion County Animal Control responded to the scene to conduct an investigation from which it emerged that 24-years-old MERCEDEES LYNN COX and 27-years-old TYLER JAMES WILLIAM HANNERS (both pictured), had bought Cinnamon and Broadway in June 2022.

Since then, Cinnamon and Broadway have lost a significant amount of weight.

Cinnamon and Broadway were in such visibly poor body condition that a veterinary with the Peterson Smith Equine Hospital was called in.

According to the press release, “Broadway was found to have a displaced colon, colic from ingesting sand, and a body condition score of one, which indicates she was emaciated. Due to the severity of Broadway’s condition, the veterinarian recommended medical euthanasia to prevent further suffering. Cinnamon was diagnosed with a heart murmur, heaves, rain rot, and a body condition score of two. With a proper medication and feeding regimen, Cinnamon is expected to make a full recovery.”

The sheriff’s office said that COX “continually insisted that the horses received adequate feedings despite the fact that both of the horses were visibly malnourished.”

The investigation determined that COX and HANNERS failed to provide adequate food, water, and medical care for Broadway and Cinnamon.

COX was arrested on September 1, 2022, and booked into the Marion County Jail on two felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty. She was released the following day after posting a $2,000 bond.

HANNERS turned himself in on September 6, 2022, and he was also charged with two felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty. He was released the following day after he was able to post a $2,000 bond.
