On the night of November 29, 2024, deputies with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence on West Oak Street in Crystal River after receiving reports about a violent individual identified as 25-year-old LUKE DANIEL ADAMS (pictured).
According to the press release by the sheriff’s office, deputies learned that ADAMS “had shot his dog in the back of the neck with a crossbow in a wooded area behind his home. After shooting the dog, he ripped out the arrow but left the tip embedded in the wound. He then placed his injured dog in the front seat of his truck and went inside his house.”
A resident saw the injured furvictim in the truck and thankfully alerted the authorities.
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office tells me that the furvictim was a female mixed breed “Florida Brown Dog” of 6-7 years old named Nova. Nova had been with ADAMS for six years.
Citrus County Animal Control rushed Nova to the Countryside Animal Clinic in Beverly Hills for immediate treatment.
The sheriff’s office said that veterinarians “worked tirelessly for hours to provide care and comfort” but the extent of Nova’s injury was “too great” and despite “the valiant efforts of emergency veterinarians” Nova could not be saved.
The sheriff’s office also kindly provided me with Nova’s pictures and explained: “The photo with the hemostats is used to show the depth in which the arrowhead was buried in the dogs neck.”
ADAMS was charged with one felony count of animal cruelty and at the time of writing, online arrest records show that he is being held into the Citrus County Jail.
“This heartbreaking loss underscores the urgent need to report and prevent animal abuse to protect those who cannot protect themselves”, said the sheriff’s office.
