The Grapevine Police Department arrested 37-years-old VANADUS GREEN (pictured), in connection with the gruesome death of an innocent dog.
According to the affidavit obtained by Voice For Us, on January 26, 2024, an officer with Grapevine Animal Services responded to the Super 8 hotel off Highway 114 after receiving a call about a dog near the dumpster.
Upon arrival, the officer found a male dog, who was “severely emaciated”, lying unresponsive on the ground. The officer rushed the Voiceless Victim to an emergency veterinary hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead.
The officer then took the dog back to the Grapevine Animal Shelter for further evaluation. The officer reported the dog to be “in poor body condition with abrasions on his legs. The dog also had a large open wound on the top of his head.”
The furvictim’s remains were sent to Mazie's Mission for a necropsy and a bone marrow analysis to determine the cause of death and how long the dog had gone without receiving the proper nutrition.
Animal Services officers then went to the hotel to obtain additional information about where the dog came from. Their investigation led them to room 324 which was registered to a female. Officers reviewed surveillance video and were able to identify GREEN as the suspect connected to the case.
In the devastating video, GREEN can be seen leaving the room with the dog and dragging the furvictim down the hallway on a leash. The footage goes on to show GREEN inside the stairwell where he pauses to “peek” to see if anyone was around. He then proceeds to drag the dog down a flight of stairs and through a door. The poor dog is understandably unable to walk and as he tries to stand, he collapses and GREEN keeps pulling him.
But that’s not all. GREEN continued to torture the helpless and defenseless dog. In fact, as seen in the disturbing video, GREEN kept pulling the poor soul all the way to the parking lot and it did not matter to him that the dog tried to get up but kept collapsing. The precious dog is then dumped as if he was trash!
Officers interviewed the female in Room 324 and she initially denied knowing anything about a dog and would not reveal the name of the man (GREEN) who was occupying the room with her. Later, she admitted the dog was GREEN’s, her boyfriend.
According to the affidavit, the female stated that GREEN found the dog a few weeks earlier and was trying to care for him. She also said that GREEN was not there at the time as he travels back and forth to Mississippi.
One of the officers then received a call from GREEN who claimed he had found the dog three or four weeks earlier. He claimed the dog was near some warehouses next door to the hotel, lying under some bushes and added that the dog was in poor condition so he thought he could “nurse” him back to health. GREEN went on to tell the officer that “despite his efforts, the dog never got better and refused to eat.”
It’s unknown why he did not seek veterinary advice or why he did not take the dog to a shelter!
GREEN said the reason the dog was near the dumpster was because that day his girlfriend told him he could not keep him in the hotel room anymore and that she was allergic.
So, he “took the dog back outside and thought it would be safe near the dumpster until he could come back and check on it”, stated the affidavit.
GREEN told the officer he still had all the products he used to treat the dog and said his girlfriend would show them. GREEN also said there was a wound on the top of the dog's head that he was treating with Neosporin. The officer then went back to the hotel and took the bag with the products.
Meanwhile, the necropsy results came back and showed that the dog had died from starvation.
“The wound to the top of the dog's head was labeled as a blunt force injury approximately a week old”, stated the affidavit. The officer also received the results of the bone marrow extracted from the dog's femur indicating the body fat was 9.72 percent and the normal range is 65-98 percent.
The officer emailed the doctor who performed the necropsy and she explained that “for the dog to get such a low percentage of body fat, it would take more than 3 or 4 weeks. She also said the injury to the top of the dog's head was less than a week old with no signs of healing. There were additional injuries to the dog's chest cavity that occurred around the same time as the head injury. She further stated as the result of his injuries and malnourishment, the dog would have suffered up until the time of death.”
The officer then concluded the following: “Vanadus treated the dog in cruel manner when he was seen on video surveillance dragging the lifeless dog across the ground and down several flights of stairs. He unreasonably abandoned the dog near a dumpster, while the dog was still alive but near death. While in his care, the dog sustained injuries to the top of the dog's head with a blunt object. The dog also sustained injuries to his chest cavity. These injuries would have resulted in significant pain to the dog, and went untreated by a veterinarian. The dog starved to death over a long period of time which should be considered a form of torture for any living thing. Lastly, due to the overall injuries and the fact that the dog was starved to death, it is believed that the dog suffered immensely until the dog took its final breath.”
A warrant for GREEN’s arrest was obtained and on February 28, 2024, he was taken into custody. He is charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal, a third-degree felony. Online arrest records show he posted bond.
Authorities did not disclose the furbaby’s name, so I took the liberty of naming him Oleander for the tribute image. Should his given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.
