The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office announced that on October 5, 2023, an arrest warrant was issued for 28-years-old GEORGE BERNARD BENYARD.
In a press release, the sheriff's office said that BENYARD “is alleged to have knowingly and needlessly killed one of his pet dogs then attempted to conceal his actions by tampering with physical evidence.”
According to the release, the sheriff’s office launched an investigation on September 15, 2023, at a property in the 10800 block of Empire Road. Deputies and detectives learned that BENYARD had told acquaintances that the bathroom of his residence on Empire Road was a “murder scene,” he showed them a picture “of a very bloody bathroom”, and then described having killed someone at his home, along with soliciting help in disposing of the body.
The sheriff’s office said that given the severity of the alleged offense and the belief that BENYARD had access to firearms and other potential weapons, the Boulder County SWAT Team served a search warrant on September 18, 2023.
While investigators remained at the property to begin processing it for evidence, BENYARD and his wife were brought in for questioning.
During the initial search, investigators found three dogs in the home and they were placed into protective custody at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
According to the release, while processing the scene, investigators discovered the body of an adult Pitbull “secreted under a bush on the property.”
Additionally, investigators found blood on the scene and with the assistance of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, it was determined that the blood was not human so detectives with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office were able to rule out a homicide.
Meanwhile, a necropsy was performed on the deceased Voiceless Victim and results showed that “the dog had been recently killed, neither by accident nor by another animal, and had suffered several traumatic injuries”, stated the release.
Through digital evidence, investigators were later able to determine that “the dog had very likely belonged to Benyard, though he denied having any knowledge of the dog’s existence or how it was killed”, said the sheriff’s office.
On October 5, 2023, the lead investigator obtained an arrest warrant for the arrest of BENYARD for the charges of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and Tampering with Physical Evidence, both of which are class 6 felonies.
The sheriff’s Office said that BENYARD’s whereabouts are unknown at this time and investigators have been actively trying to locate him since the warrant was issued by the courts.
Authorities did not disclose the name of the deceased furbaby, so I took the liberty of naming him/her Blossom for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.
