Following a gut-wrenching video that was widely circulated on social media, showing 26-years-old MATTHEW JACOB FIALA (pictured), abusing a defenseless dog, FIALA is now facing animal cruelty charges.

The incident, that was thankfully recorded by a neighbor, happened on January 2, 2024, at FIALA’s home.

The video starts with FIALA taking a picture of a German Shepherd on a leash. FIALA then can be seen pulling the dog to a crate and the dog can be seen resisting. Once the Voiceless Victim is inside the crate, FIALA looks around and then throws a bucket of water in the dog’s face. But that’s not all.  As the German Shepherd attempts to escape, FIALA flips and tips the crate with the dog inside. FIALA then opens the crate door and when the furbaby tries to escape, FIALA proceeds to kick the crate door right near the dog’s face. FIALA can also be seen slamming the crate against the concrete.

Throughout the video, the German Shepherd can be heard yelping and crying.

The Pleasant Hill Police Department received a copy of the video on January 2, 2024, and officers responded to FIALA’s home.

FIALA claims to be a dog trainer and appears to operate under several different names.

According to 41 KSHB, Pleasant Hill Police Chief Thomas Wright told the news outlet: “We think it’s a client’s dog” and added: “The dog could still be at Fiala’s house. We could not seize the dog. He didn’t let us in his house.”

41 KSHB reports that FIALA told police there are a total of six dogs in his house, and police believe three of them are his.

Police Chief Wright told KCTV: “We know that the neighbors have reported abuse in the past, but it’s always been anonymous. The difference in this case is that somebody has decided, ‘Hey, it’s time to stand up for these animals.’ And so that and with that video that gives us evidence that we need to put a case together.”

On Monday, January 8, 2024, city prosecutors charged FIALA with animal cruelty, having too many animals in his home, and not having a business license.

Court records show that FIALA is scheduled to appear at Pleasant Hill Municipal Court on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. before Judge Roger Andre Potter.

Chief Wright said this is an ongoing investigation and his department is working with the Cass County Prosecuting Attorney for possible state charges.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said that on August 2, 2022, deputies were made aware of the killing of two dogs in the area of rural Cumberland.

According to the sheriff’s office, the two deceased dogs were found near a bridge on 660th Street, close to Tucson Road. Before being thrown over the bridge, both dogs had been shot in the head and their back legs had been bound. The sheriff’s office added that both furbabies had been missing since July 27, 2022.

FOX 34 identified Mr. Logan Lank as the dogs’ guardian.

Lank said that his dogs, a 1-year-old female Pitbull named Bella, and a 3-year-old black Labrador named Pepper, were snatched from his home in Cumberland. The bridge where Bella and Pepper were found is just two miles away from his home.

Lank told FOX 34 that when Bella and Pepper went missing, the community was a big help with the search which sadly ended with the heartbreaking discovery.

All of the neighbors around here loved them. I’ve never had any complaints about them,” he said.

Additionally, according to Lank, the community has donated money towards a reward for any information that would lead to an arrest.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating these murders and is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren said whoever did it could face animal cruelty charges and believes, based on pictures, that the dogs were killed around the day they went missing.

Speak up for the VOICELESS VICTIMS. They deserve justice and their murderer deserves to begin his/her rotting process in prison first and then end it in hell!

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of Cass County Animal Control, is investigating after several dogs and horses were shot at a family farm on the 6600 block of Kessington Road, near Hawk Street, in Calvin Township.

The sheriff’s office said that many separate incidents took place over a 5-6 week time frame one week before Easter and suspects that one or more individuals are carrying out the targeted attacks.

Back in May, reporter Paige Barnes with WSBT 22 spoke with the family who understandably wishes to remain anonymous.

The family said they feel like a sitting target and said that at least seven of their horses have been shot dead, several of their dogs were hurt, and are worried about their own wellbeing. One dog was still alive but injured with a bullet lodged in his shoulder.

One family member told WSBT 22 she wishes she could say that a teenager is behind all this but bullet patterns suggest whoever is responsible, they know what they’re doing.

Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke said animal shootings on this scale are rare and is looking for an ulterior motive. He told WSBT 22: “It's very non typical. We don't know if we're gonna call it animal cruelty. It is cruel. Don't get me wrong. We don't know if there's other intentions involved here.”

Sheriff Behnke also said that the shootings appear to be connected, but his office doesn’t have enough evidence to prove that.

Anyone with information regarding the murders of these innocent souls is asked to call the Cass County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 1-800-462-9328 or contact the Sheriff’s Office through the Anonymous Web Tip Line. Thank you!
