PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is offering a reward of up to $7,000 for information in an animal cruelty case which is being investigated by Newport News Animal Welfare.

In a news release, Newport News Animal Welfare said that on Monday, July 11, 2022, at about 8:40 a.m. its officers were called to the 2500 block of Marshall Avenue for a report of a deceased dog beside a trash dumpster.

Upon arrival, officers found a lifeless female Cane Corso inside a wire crate.

A necropsy performed on the furbaby revealed that she was 1 to 2 years old and “most likely died from an act of animal cruelty.”

Newport News Animal Welfare did not reveal specifics on the cause of death.

The initial investigation concluded the dog was pushed to the dumpster in a wire crate that was placed on the frame of a baby stroller.

Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to come forward and do the right thing. Please, call the Newport News Animal Welfare Division at (757) - 933 - 8953. Thank you!

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office arrested 18-years-old BRIANNA ANN MARIE SAINVIL (pictured), after she starved her dog to death.

According to NBC 2, SAINVIL contacted Animal Control only after her dog, Drako, had passed away and told investigators that she had used Google to diagnose Drako with heartworms. However, SAINVIL never took her dog to the vet.

Animal Control Senior Officer Rheannon Juergensen said Drako hadn’t been seen by a vet since his puppy shots in June 2021. Drako died in December 2021.

A necropsy was performed on the VOICELESS VICTIM and a vet determined that Drako’s death was not caused by a health issue.

ACO Juergensen told NBC 2: “There was no absolute obvious medical condition such as any sort of congenital defects or anything to explain that type of death, outside of starvation.”

SAINVIL is charged with one Felony count of torture an animal with intent to hurt/injured/kill, and two Misdemeanor counts of abandonment of an animal.

ACO Juergensen explained that “You can actually, under definition, abandon your animal while still living with the animal. Abandonment in the sense of fail to provide, fail to care for, fail to provide necessary sustenance.”

NBC 2 reports that SAINVIL’s neighbors at Paxton Terrace said they always had an idea something was wrong with Drako. Kanvas Pool even told NBC 2: “At 11 months old, he didn’t look quite right. Every time he would be out loose a lot. He was always very skinny.”

Pool went on to say: “One day he was out roaming around so I knocked on their door and no one answered so I opened the fence to put him back cause I saw like a cage. It was very dirty. There was no water in the cage at all. And there was feces everywhere.”

It’s unclear whether these “neighbors” actually ever stepped in and reported what they were seeing to animal control!!!!

If you look into your neighbors’ yard and you do not report suspected animal cruelty, then you are just a filthy gossip and are no better than the animal abuser!!!! At least avoid telling the media that you knew there was something wrong!

Online records show that SAINVIL was taken into custody on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, and released the same day after posting a paltry $2,500 bond.

SAINVIL’s arraignment has been scheduled to take place on August 29, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. at the Charlotte County Justice Center before Judge Donald H. Mason.

~ Update: July 9, 2022

I have emailed reporter Jeff Weinsier with Local 10 and addressed my concern about the discrepancy between Ms. Benford’s statement about how she discovered the dog, and what the video published by Local 10 shows.

~ Original story:

Hollywood Police are investigating after a deceased dog was discovered with his/her head and legs stuffed in a pillowcase.

The lady who made the horrific discovery, Ms. Norma Benford, posted the heartbreaking pictures and video on Facebook and alerted the authorities.

While the initial reactions from devastated and outraged people understandably called the incident an act of animal cruelty, police are saying the dog may have died of natural causes, or he/she could have been sick and this may a case of illegal dumping.

Ms. Benford found the furbaby on Independence Day on a canal bank off Johnson Street by Stanley Goldman Memorial Park.

When she noticed the body of the dog, she rushed over to the spot.

She told Local 10: “I was sitting here and I looked over and I said, ‘Geez, that looks like a body.’ I came across this horrible scene. He looked like he was well taken care of. He wasn’t skinny, no ribs (showing). How could someone do that?

Ms. Benford said police remained on the scene for a few hours and an investigator removed the pillowcase from the dog’s head.

She further told Local 10: “By his head they found a collar and they found a toy, a dog toy.”

The remains of the VOICELESS VICTIM were taken to Hollywood Animal Hospital for a necropsy.

If you have any information about this case, please, call the Hollywood Police Department at (954) - 967- 4636. Thank you!

Something about this case puzzles me and I want to share it with you. According to Ms. Benford, she saw from across the canal what appeared to be a body and when she rushed over, she found a dog with a pillowcase on his/her head, and a pillowcase on the dog’s legs. However, the video published by Local 10, shows reporter Jeff Weinsier interviewing Ms. Benford and when she recounts the events while pointing at the spot, a dog can be seen in the video laying without pillowcases.
