Following an investigation by PETA into the abuse of several dogs on a property on Governor’s Road, Windsor, the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 58-years-old CHERELLE M. ASKEW.

On June 22, ASKEW was issued three criminal summons charging her with seven MISDEMEANOR counts of cruelty to animals.

In a press release PETA said that the charges stem from ASKEW’s “prolonged neglect of seven dogs she kept chained outdoors, at least one of whom, a young black pit bull named Minnie, died.”

According to PETA, on February 15, its fieldworkers found Minnie’s skeletal remains, still chained, inside her doghouse. A necropsy revealed that Minnie had died of “starvation and extreme neglect.”

The other dogs on the property, Buddy, Duchess, Duke, Nala, Sandy, and Zeus were kept chained in filthy conditions.

PETA also said that Buddy, a Chihuahua, was given to the organization in August 2021.

From PETA’s press release, it appears that ASKEW was “repeatedly educated” about how to care for these innocent and helpless lives. It is unclear, however, why it took months to remove the dogs resulting also in Minnie’s death.

The organization said: “PETA’s fieldworkers consistently found them and Minnie malnourished and neglected, even though they had repeatedly educated Askew about the dogs’ basic needs and provided her with free food, doghouses, flea and flystrike prevention, cable tie-outs and collars to replace heavy chains and painful choke collars, spay/neuter services, and more. After months of pleading and urging by PETA, the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office finally removed four surviving dogs: Zeus (whose ears are freshly injured and permanently disfigured from years of flystrike), Duke, Sandy, and Duchess. Nala’s status and whereabouts are unknown.”

So, the aftermath of pleading for months is, one dead dog, one missing dog, and one “permanently disfigured” dog!

PETA is urging Bertie County officials to ban 24/7 tethering of dogs, which is the best way to help ensure that no other animals suffer as these dogs did,” said PETA.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 27-years-old CHRISTOPHER DEVONOLLIE JACKSON after he left his dog outside in the heat resulting in the senseless and preventable death of the furbaby.

In a press release the sheriff’s office said on Saturday, June 18, at approximately 3:00 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of Jasmine Street in Mandeville after a neighbor called about a dog being left out in the heat.

Upon arrival, STPSO deputies found the dog deceased.

According to the press release, the dog was “tethered in the yard without water, shade, food or a shelter of any kind”, and the heat index at the time was 114 degrees.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office told me in an email that the furbaby was a female Pitbull and she had been recently adopted from a shelter.

JACKSON was taken into custody and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on one felony count of animal cruelty.

St. Tammany Parish Animal Services staff took custody of the VOICELESS VICTIM.

Despite numerous campaigns aimed to educate furparents on how to help their furbabies cope with the different kinds of weather, there are still selfish, heartless, soulless, irresponsible, and careless people who think that the death of an animal is not a big deal!

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith sent out his own appeal and said: “It is extremely hot outside. I plead to all pet owners to please make sure your pets have adequate water, food and some place to go to stay cool. Our pets cannot tell us when they are hot or when they are thirsty. They rely on us to care for them, and in this case this man failed to provide the bare minimum and his dog died as a result.”

I have emailed the sheriff’s office and requested additional information about the furbaby.

If they respond I will post an update.

Online arrest records show this lowlife is still in custody where I am sure he’s been given water, food, and shade!

Baden Police arrested 29-years-old DI XIAO (pictured) for leaving her dog in extreme heat who then had to be euthanized.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 15, police responded to a property on 970 Collins Avenue Court regarding a dog complaint.

Upon arrival, at the rear of the residence police found a Siberian Husky named Noki.

Noki was tied up and muzzled. The furbaby was in extreme distress and lethargic. As if the scenario was not cruel and heartbreaking enough, there was no sign of water or shade for the poor soul!

XIAO then came out and police asked her to take the muzzle off Noki.

Reportedly, she tried to give Noki some water but the furbaby was too tired to even try to drink.

Noki was taken to the Big Rock Veterinary Hospital in New Brighton.

Sadly, due to complications from heat stroke, Noki was euthanized. Noki went into a seizure and began bleeding due to his/her organs failing.

Hospital staff told police Noki was “cooked from the inside”, and that his/her internal temperature didn’t initially even read on the thermometer, before reading at 109.3 degrees.

Under Pennsylvania’s “Libre’s Law” which took effect on August 28, 2017, dogs must have access to shade or water when outside, and it prohibits keeping dogs out for longer than a half hour when the temperature is 90 degrees.

XIAO told Beaver County Humane Officer Tristan Wenzig that she had not checked in on the dog for two hours beforehand.

A neighbor, Ms. Eda Giordani, told CBS News that she had called the Humane Society “over 6 months ago because neighbors were saying the dog was crying was without water.”

To that, Officer Wenzig responded that he did go to the house about a year ago for a complaint about the dog living in bad conditions.

The dog was supposedly living outside in bad conditions, but during my investigation, I didn't find anything wrong. I found a very healthy, fun-loving dog that knew a lot of tricks”, he said.

Officer Wenzig told Pittsburgh Action News: “Whenever I go to calls, people tell me these animals are like family, like their children. Treat them like your children then.”

Court papers show that the soulless and heartless female is charged with a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals – torture, a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals – causing death, one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals, and two misdemeanor counts of neglect to animals.

XIAO was booked into the Beaver County Prison after failing to post a $2,500 bail.

Her preliminary hearing is set for June 27, 2022, at 8:45 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Dirk A. Goodwald.
