The Canton Police Department arrested 21-year-old CYNTHIA ANN SCHMIDGALL and 20-year-old ETHAN WAYNE SCHMIDGALL (both pictured).
On June 7, 2024, police along with the Stark County Humane Society responded to a home on Henry Avenue SW south of Route 30 after a report from the Humane Society.
The inside of the home was covered in feces and urine. Officials found several cats and dogs who were severely malnourished.
Sadly, three cats and four dogs were found dead.
Police said that some of them had been dead for so long that they began to liquefy and seep into the ground.
A total of sixteen animals were rescued and are now recovering at the Stark County Humane Society. According to police, two of the rescued dogs were so emaciated that their rib cages were visible and they were struggling standing up.
Officials learned from multiple neighbors that the SCHMIDGALLS had not been at the home for three to four weeks.
The couple are now facing twenty-three charges of prohibitions concerning companion animals. Only seven of those counts are felonies, the others are misdemeanors.
The SCHMIDGALLS waived their preliminary hearings in Canton Municipal Court and their cases bound over to Stark County Common Pleas Court.
