~ Original story:
The DeKalb County Police Department was made aware of a Ring doorbell video that shows a savage male assaulting a defenseless dog. Police said it appears that the incident took place on March 12, 2023.
Atlanta News First reports that a resident identified as Sonja, saw the distressing video on the Nextdoor app on Monday, March 13, 2023, and was able to figure out the location of the incident. Details from the video, led Sonja to the Highlands at East Atlanta apartments on Flat Shoals Road.
Sonja did the right thing and came forward giving a voice to the voiceless victim and filed a report with DeKalb County Animal Services. She then shared with Atlanta News First pictures showing the authorities’ trucks on the location.
Police released still images of the video and Fox 5 chose to not show the video in its entirety due to the graphic content.
In the first part of the video, a male can be seen running down a flight of stairs chasing a dog. Once the savage catches the dog, he starts striking him/her. The video goes on to show the savage picking up the dog by the head and slamming him/her against the wall before he chases the dog up the stairs.
Management at the complex told Atlanta News First dogs aren’t allowed on the property unless they are service dogs. “A leasing agent said, to date, only one resident has filed to have a service animal – and the animal is not the one seen in the video,” reports Atlanta News First.
Through an initial Facebook post police advised that they are assisting the DeKalb County Animal Enforcement Services with the investigation and appealed to the public for information about the savage.
According to an update on the story published by DKPD, investigators have a “possible suspect identified and are in the process of obtaining warrants.”
Police did not release the savage’s name and the condition of the voiceless victim is unknown.
Ms. Claudine Wilkins, founder of the Animal Protection Society and Animal Law Source, told Fox 5: “No matter what the victim is, and in this case it's an animal, a crime has been committed. Regardless of how anyone feels about animals, when a crime is committed, the police should take action because that's their duty.”
