- Florida, USA -
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey has arrested 68-years-old JOSEPH ALEX FARKAS (pictured), whose actions he described as “truly despicable and horrific.”
In a press release Sheriff Ivey said that this animal cruelty case started in early September when Animal Enforcement Officers and the Animal Cruelty Unit launched an investigation following a call from a concerned citizen that FARKAS was “literally starving his dogs to death.”
Upon arrival, officers found a disturbing scenario. Two female dogs, Darcy and Katie, were emaciated and in a state of paralysis, to the extent that officers had to physically carry the furbabies outside of the home, said the sheriff.
The dogs’ conditions were so desperate that Katie had been paralyzed on the floor of the residence for several days and was laying in puddle of her own urine.
As a result of Katie not being able to escape to safety or change position, vets said she also suffered urine scalding.
Darcy was suffering from untreated skin disease, and total and complete emaciation.
“Darcy was actually suffering paralysis due to Farkas’ intentional neglect and lack of compassion,” said Sheriff Ivey.
He then added: “ In fact, our vets determined that Farkas’ intentional starvation of Darcy had caused her to go into an advanced state of hypovolemic shock. Essentially Darcy’s organs were shutting down, her heart was unable to circulate blood, and she was days from death when our team showed up. This was all medically determined to be caused by severe starvation.”
Sheriff Ivey showed pictures of the VOICELESS VICTIMS and when he came across the picture of a bag of dog food he said: “And to further show you what evil looks like…. a sealed bag of dog food rested against the wall directly in view of Katie and Darcy where our investigation revealed that it had been sitting, unopened for at least a month. What kind of sick, demented, and cruel person does that to a helpless animal as our Vets believe that the bag of unopened dog food being in immediate view of Katie and Darcy actually inflicted further suffering, mental anguish and torment in addition to the physical suffering they were already experiencing.”
According to the sheriff, there is no question that FARKAS was intentionally starving Darcy and Katie to death and showed no remorse as he told investigators that he “didn’t think his dogs needed any help.”
Sheriff Ivey accused FARKAS of knowing exactly what he was doing and for whatever “sick reason” he chose to not do anything to help his dogs.
Sheriff Ivey revealed that when deputies obtained a warrant for his arrest and went to his home, FARKAS refused to open the door and even tried to drink liquid detergent in an effort to avoid going to jail because he knew he would need medical attention.
Officers were able to kick the door long before FARKAS could drink enough liquid to harm himself.
Right after he was medically examined, FARKAS was placed behind bars.
Sheriff Ivey then addressed FARKAS and said: “Trust me, you deserve to be under the jail but since the law only allows me to put you in it, that will have to do.”
FARKAS was arrested on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, on two felony counts of animal cruelty and two counts of unlawful confinement.
Online arrest records show he is being held in the Brevard County Jail on $11,000 bond.
This is a story where evil did not win because Darcy and Katie are getting better, they are walking and running. Not only that, but I am also overjoyed to report that Darcy has already been adopted and Katie will be soon.
