ANITA DAMODARAN arrested in Florida on a warrant from Chicago Police for animal cruelty

On the afternoon of December 10, 2024, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested 38-year-old ANITA DAMODARAN (pictured) on a warrant from the Chicago Police Department for counts of animal cruelty.


In a press release the sheriff’s office said that DAMODARAN was taken into custody at a residence off of Barbados Isle Drive in Tampa.

DAMODARAN was booked into the Orient Road Jail and the Chicago Police Department will extradite her to Illinois.


It all started back in March 2024, with a phone call to the Hinsdale Humane Society after two women found a dog named Betty “in a Chicago residence, locked in a plastic container—the kind you store Christmas decorations in—with crates stacked on top”, said the organization in a press release.


Given the condition Betty was found in, the Good Samaritans rushed her to MedVet Chicago.


One of Betty’s rescuers recounted the moments of the heartbreaking discovery, “When the two crates were removed, we stopped in our tracks because we suddenly saw the lid pop off and a tiny paw reach out. We thought it was a container of stuffed animals. Then the lid fell completely off and out came a matted creature staring at us in despair, with eyes that were stoic and unblinking. It took at least 30 seconds, although it felt like eternity, for us to realize that this was a dog close to its last breath.”


The Hinsdale Humane Society said in a Facebook post that Betty, now renamed Boots, is living her best life because of those who kindly donated toward her medical care.


Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said: “We remain committed to collaborating with our law enforcement partners to ensure that those who commit acts of cruelty are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our dedication extends to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our community, innocent victims who cannot speak for themselves.”

ANTONIO ROSS arrested after one dog was found dead and another in poor health

The Joliet Police Department arrested 52-year-old ANTONIO ROSS (pictured).


According to the Department’s press release obtained by Voice For Us, on the early afternoon of November 11, 2024, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Baker Avenue to conduct a welfare check on two dogs on the property.


In the backyard of the residence, officers found two dogs who were chained up. One of the two dogs was sadly deceased.

Police told me the deceased furvictim was a 10-year-old black Yorkie mix named George.

The live dog, whom police told me is a 1 ½-year-old tan Pitbull mix named Illinois, was in “very poor health”.


Joliet Township Animal Control took possession of both dogs.


Police said ROSS “claimed ownership of both dogs” and he was placed under arrest.

ROSS was charged with cruel treatment of animals and released on a notice to appear in Will County Courthouse to face his charges.


In my email to the Joliet Police Department I asked whether the cause of death of the deceased dog was known and I was told that a necropsy will be performed.


My question regarding Illinois’ wellbeing did not receive a response.


The case remains under investigation and no additional information is available.

CHRISTINA J. HELM arrested for neglecting and abusing her dog

The Naperville Police Department arrested 32-year-old CHRISTINA J. HELM (pictured).

 

According to the Department’s media release, it all started back in October 2023, when a concerned citizen alerted Animal Control to “a case of potential animal abuse” at HELM’s apartment in the 100 block of Testa Drive.

 

The tipster explained that they had agreed to take care of HELM’s dog, a female Pitbull mix named Olive, while she was on a business trip.

 

Police said Olive was emaciated and could barely walk. Additionally, she had open sores on her hip bone. Olive was immediately taken to an emergency veterinary hospital where she was treated for starvation and dehydration. Veterinarians said the sores likely happened by having the furvictim caged in one position too long.

 

Naperville Police launched an investigation and as a result, Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians executed a search warrant at HELM’s residence where they found “evidence of alleged animal abuse”, stated the release.

 

On May 23, 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for HELM and she turned herself into the police on May 28, 2024.

HELM was booked into the DuPage County Jail on three felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and three misdemeanor counts of violations of owner’s duties.

HELM is also facing one misdemeanor count of endangering the life or health of a child “for allegedly committing aggravated animal cruelty to an animal that resided in the same residence as a minor”, said police.

 

Judge Joshua Dieden ordered HELM to be released on the condition that she does not have any animals. Court records show that HELM is due back in court on June 24, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

 

As for Olive, she thankfully recovered and was first placed in the care of a shelter and later adopted.
