Honolulu police are investigating after a dog was found on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, with two bullet wounds on the side of the road in Maili.

Cassie Moniz, with Aloha Animal Outreach, received a call around 4:30 p.m. about an injured dog laying on the side of the road after being hit by a car. The driver did not stop.

When Cassie arrived on the scene, she found a male dog who was covered in fleas, ticks, ants, and in pain.

PAWS of Hawaii said in the Facebook post that Cassie took the 1-year-old furbaby named Nakoa, to VCA Animal Hospital in Kapolei.

After taking X-rays, veterinarians learned that Nakoa had been shot twice. PAWS of Hawaii said: “To make it worse, this was NOT a BB gun, but real bullets. Someone shot this innocent animal and left him to die on the side of the road.”

One of the two wounds was old, while the other was recent.

KITV reports that Ku'ulei Durand, Executive Director of PAWS of Hawaii, explained: “It fully severed his spine, just shattering the vertebrae. They said if the bullet had missed his spine, we would've been able to save him. But, because it severed his spine he has severe damage to all of his body, and he's going to be a paraplegic dog for the rest of his life.”

Not only that, but veterinarians also said Nakoa’s leg would have to be amputated, so, due to the poor quality of life Nakoa would have, the decision was made to euthanize him.

Durand also explained that the bullets vets extracted from Nakoa’s body will be sent “over to authorities to try and figure out who did this to this dog.” PAWS of Hawaii said Nakoa was shot with a 9mm.

Furthermore, vets performed a CT scan and as Durand explained: “It's actually very important to do his CT scan because not only will this tell us what's wrong with him, the CT scan would be able to be used in prosecuting whoever it is that did this to him.”

In announcing Nakoa’s passing, PAWS of Hawaii wrote in a Facebook post: “It’s with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to sweet Nakoa. Our hearts break as tears fill our eyes tonight. Thankfully he knew he was loved & supported by soooo many these last two days. We pray he felt kindness & love around him as he passed over to the rainbow bridge. We are very sorry that a human had enacted such cruel crimes toward this innocent soul. We wish we could have gotten a chance to show him & teach him a life that’s filled with endless love, kisses & what a true companionship is.

E ho’omaha me ka maluhia. Aloha mau loa. Poina ‘ole. (Rest in peace. Forever loved. Never forgotten.)”

If you have any information, I beg you, come forward and speak up for Nakoa.

The Baltimore County Police Department's Cockeysville Precinct is investigating after a 22-year-old llama named Skippy was found beaten so badly that had to be euthanized.

On the morning of Sunday, September 11, 2022, Mrs. Holly Callahan-Kasmala went to check on her trio of llamas and two alpacas on her farm that she co-owns with her husband Pete, on Beckleysville Road in Millers.

Mrs. Callahan-Kasmala told CBS Baltimore that she found Skippy lying in an unusual spot and she immediately knew that something was wrong.

She explained: “Even from that distance, I could see the pulse in his neck. I could see how high his respiration was.”

The veterinarian who was called to the scene determined that Skippy had three broken legs, two of which had compound fractures. No bite or claw marks were found on Skippy’s body.

The vet humanely euthanized Skippy.

Mrs. Callahan-Kasmala believes a person or multiple people made their way onto the farm and broke Skippy’s legs intentionally. She did not find any signs of a predator entering the farm and said: “If a pack of coyotes or a bear had gone after him, there would be bites.”

According to The Baltimore Sun, Mrs. Callahan-Kasmala said “it appeared that human hands had unscrewed the screw eyes that secure stall guards inside the couple’s horse barn. She says she believes that either someone broke Skippy’s legs either as a deliberate act of cruelty, or a group of intoxicated young people decided to beat up the llama.”

An extremely emotional Mrs. Callahan-Kasmala said: “He dragged himself to the barn with broken legs, essentially. The thing that haunts me is that this happened during the night and I didn't find him until the next morning, and he suffered with this all night. I don't understand how anyone could do that to an animal and then leave them there in agony. No one deserves that.”

She added that Skippy was a rescue and she had had him for 18 years.

He took care of the alpacas. He was like their uncle. They're very upset, they're traumatized and they do look for him, they call for him… It's extremely, it's heartbreaking,” she also said.

If you have any information about this barbaric crime, please contact the Baltimore County Police Department's Cockeysville Precinct at (410) - 877 - 1820. Thank you!

The Animal Rescue League of Boston is caring for a dog who was found along Route 1 in the area of Ellis Avenue in Norwood, with second-degree burns to her head and body.

The furbaby, a 1-year-old mixed breed female now named Annie, was found by a passerby on August 19, 2022, who then took her to the Norwood Police Station. Annie was wearing a leash and collar but did not have any tags or a microchip.

In a press release the ARL said that Norwood Animal Control Officer Henry Cerqueira contacted ARL Law Enforcement and Annie was transported to ARL’s Dedham Animal Care and Adoption Center to treat her wounds.

As the horrific and devastating pictures show, Annie suffered burns on her head, neck, shoulders, front limbs, and abdomen.

On August 22, 2022, Annie was transferred to Tufts Veterinary Emergency Treatment and Specialties in Walpole due to the severity of the wounds and pain level.

For several days Annie has received intensive veterinary care before returning to ARL.

As the nonprofit said, Annie “has a long road, perhaps months, of recovery ahead of her.”

ARL's Law Enforcement and Norwood Police Department are jointly investigating the incident as a case of animal cruelty and abandonment.

Both agencies are now reaching out to the public for help in hopes of finding the monster(s) responsible for this heinous crime.

If you have any information that can help with this ongoing investigation, please, come forward and speak up for the VOICELESS VICTIM.

Please call ARL Law Enforcement at (617) - 426 - 9170 ext. 110 or submit your tips via email.

Alternatively, please call the Norwood Police Department at (781) - 440 - 5100. Thank you!

If you wish and can afford to donate toward Annie’s medical expenses, please visit the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s website. Thank you!

When a story puts a huge knot in my stomach, I struggle to express my feelings so, right now, the only thing I can say to the heartless, soulless, and useless individual who did this to Annie is, may life treat you and the people you love the most, the SAME way you treated Annie!
