~ Update: April 24, 2024

Following a press release by the Valley Center Police Department and obtained by Voice For Us, I learned the following:

On April 22, 2024, a Valley Center School Resource Officer was approached by a Valley Center High School employee and advised that an allegation was made claiming the Valley Center Varsity Boys Baseball Team had killed a chicken on the field prior to traveling for an away game on April 20th, 2024.  The field is located on USD262 property behind 737 N. Meridian in Valley Center.

The Valley Center Police Department continues the investigation and will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

We encourage anyone who has information about the incident to contact the Valley Center Police Department.”

Updates will be added as they become available.

~ Original story:

The Valley Center school district has suspended the high school varsity baseball team’s season due to an active law enforcement investigation centered around possible animal cruelty.

KSNW reports that on Monday, April 22, 2024, the district sent out the following message to all Valley Center High School families:

The Valley Center High School varsity baseball season has been suspended due to an active law enforcement investigation. High school administrators were alerted to an incident of possible animal cruelty involving the entire Hornet varsity baseball team and the entire coaching staff on USD 262 property. Immediately upon learning of the incident, high school and district leadership notified the appropriate authorities and suspended the season. A decision regarding the remainder of the baseball season will be made pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Details of the possible animal cruelty have not been released.

I have emailed the Valley Center Police Department to inquire about the investigation but Chief Lloyd Newman said: “We are still very early in the investigation and gathering information.”

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating after the discovery of ten deceased dogs on a property in Louisburg.

In a press release, the sheriff’s office said that on January 24, 2024, deputies responded to a property in the 25900 block of Rockville Road for a welfare check on multiple dogs on the property. Upon arrival, they could see that several dogs were sadly dead and several others were alive but malnourished.

As part of the investigation, a search warrant was obtained and executed. At the time the warrant was executed, no one was at the property, said the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found ten deceased Great Danes while nine Great Danes and one Shepherd-mix were found alive but in need of immediate medical attention.

Some of the surviving dogs are currently under care at a local veterinary while others are at a sanctuary. As stated in the press release, “They are not available to be visited or adopted until the investigation and case is complete.

The sheriff’s office said detectives believe this property “is part of a larger operation that spans across the State of Kansas and the United States” and they are working “with investigators in other jurisdictions and believe at least 100 other canines are in similar condition based on the other jurisdiction investigations.”

Additionally, detectives have identified a possible person(s) of interest but no additional details were disclosed.

As for the deceased Great Danes, necropsies will be performed to determine their cause of death and the sheriff’s office will release updates as they become available.

The sheriff’s office encourages anyone who has information regarding this investigation to come forward and call (913) - 294 - 3232. If you wish to remain anonymous, please call (816) - 474 - TIPS (8477). Thank you!

I emailed the Miami County Sheriff's Office to see whether additional information was available on all of the Voiceless Victims. Part of the response I received via email from Undersheriff Kelly read: “At this time we are not releasing any photos of the animals while the investigation is ongoing. I can tell you that the 10 that were rescued are still very sick and being treated medically and under constant care and supervision. The rescue and the veterinary are doing everything they can to make sure they have a full recovery.  Unfortunately, we are in a waiting period to know if they will make a full recovery or not.”

Undersheriff Kelly tells me that he will likely release more information either today or tomorrow, so I will update the article accordingly.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 46-years-old SAMUEL ROMAN (pictured).

In a news release the sheriff’s office said that on Friday, September 23, 2022, Sumner County Deputies were dispatched to check the welfare of several dogs at a property on 1076 West 120th Avenue, Conway Springs.

As indicated in the release, ROMAN, who owns the property, is a licensed breeder who recently had his license suspended by the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

Upon arrival, deputies found “multiple dogs in deplorable conditions, poor health, suffering from malnourishment and old injuries,” stated the release.

Three of the dogs present on the property, had “fresh traumatic injuries that did not appear to be receiving medical attention” so they were immediately removed by Wellington Police Department Animal Control and taken to Heersche’s Animal Clinic to receive care and treatment.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Sumner County Deputies along with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Winfield Police Department, Cowley County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol served a search warrant on the property that led to the removal of an additional sixty-five dogs bringing the total to sixty-eight.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office said the dogs who were removed range from puppies to adults.

The dogs removed from ROMAN’s property were distributed through various organizations, including, Beauties and Beasts, Golden Belt Humane Society, Animal Rescue operations, and the Caring Hands Humane Society. The sheriff’s office said the above groups were “instrumental in transporting and finding foster homes for the animals.”

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office tells me that no deceased animals were found on the property.

ROMAN was charged with cruelty to animals and the investigation is ongoing.

KAKE.com reports that it all started in 2017, when Randi Carter with Beauties and Beasts uploaded on Facebook a video showing some dogs with kennels totally flooded, and others with growths all over their heads.

In 2021, the Humane Society of the United States placed ROMAN on its list of the top 100 worst puppy mills in the country.
