PEDRO CARLOS PEREZ JR convicted in an animal neglect case

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office announced the conviction of 39-year-old PEDRO CARLOS PEREZ JR (pictured).


It all started back in March 2024, when Levy County Animal Services were contacted by a concerned citizen who reported that PEREZ was not caring for his dogs at his Morriston home.


According to the sheriff’s office, although Animal Services made multiple attempts and issued notices to PEREZ ordering him to comply with statutory requirements to care for the dogs, he “ignored all orders and the condition of the dogs deteriorated.”


On June 5, 2024, Ag Detective Gary Garboski responded to PEREZ’s home to assist Animal Services following a report of animal neglect.

Ten (10) dogs were removed from PEREZ’s home and criminal charges were finally filed against him.


All of the furvictims were taken to the Levy County Animal Services facility where they received the veterinary treatment they needed and deserved.


Ag Detective Garboski wrote in his report: “The def was given several warnings and ample time to correct the living conditions for these animals and refused causing their condition to deteriorate to unhealthy, malnourished condition over time.”

The report went on to say: “…the veterinarians' assessment accompanied by time lapse between warnings and living conditions not improving. With no compliance and overall inhumane treatment of these animals the def is charged with animal neglect. No reasonable and prudent person would consider this a sanitary healthy environment for any animal.”


On March 25, 2025, a Levy County Jury found PEREZ guilty on all ten (10) counts of animal neglect and upon issuance of the verdict PEREZ was immediately remanded into the custody of the Levy County Detention Facility.


Three days later, Levy County Judge Luis Enrique Bustamante sentenced PEREZ to ONLY 180 days in the Levy County Detention Facility followed by one year of probation and restitution of $32,000 to Levy County Animal Services.


All of the Voiceless Victims were ultimately re-homed.


A spokesperson for the Levy County Sheriff’s Office tells me that this was not a dogfighting case and no animals were found deceased. The sheriff’s office kindly provided Voice For Us with the pictures in the gallery.

TIMOTHY RICHARD SPARKS arrested after his dog was found in “alarming” condition

Levy County Animal Services received multiple complaints about a dog who was being abused at a home on 7450 North West 168TH Lane in Trenton and on March 18, 2025, they reached out to the Levy County Sheriff’s Office and alerted deputies to the situation.


The following day, a deputy responded to the location to investigate. The deputy was familiar with the resident, 38-year-old TIMOTHY RICHARD SPARKS (pictured), because two months prior, SPARKS had been arrested and released on bond. SPARKS was caught for drug possession after being stopped for speeding.


Lying in the driveway, the deputy found a female dog whose appearance was reported as “alarming” and near death. The deputy’s attempts to contact SPARKS were unsuccessful. He remained on the scene for over thirty minutes, and although he could hear people talking inside the home, no one answered the door.


The deputy noted that the dog “had little hair, was malnourished, a severe rash covered her body, she appeared dehydrated and fleas could be seen crawling all over her”, said the sheriff’s office.


Based on the dog’s condition, the deputy called in Animal Services and they responded to remove the furvictim who was immediately seen by a veterinarian.

Animal Services staff named the dog Lena.


Meanwhile, the deputy continued his investigation and obtained statements from witnesses who saw SPARKS abusing the dog. One witness stated that they saw SPARKS “hitting and kicking the dog.” Another witness saw SPARKS “shoot at the dog.”


The veterinarian who examined Lena reported that her condition was “far worse than expected”, said the sheriff’s office.

he veterinarian’s report reflected multiple parasitic infestations, bacterial infection, yeast infection, and evidence of starvation. Lena’s bowels only contained pine cone debris, evidence she was eating indigestible matter to stave off her hunger pangs. The furvictim was treated surgically to remove afterbirth that was not naturally expelled after delivering puppies. During surgery, the vet found and removed four shotgun buckshot pellets from Lena’s abdomen.


Deputies were alerted that SPARKS needed to be located and arrested for animal cruelty based on this investigation.


On March 30, 2025, Deputy Lockett located SPARKS slumped over the steering wheel of his running truck in the parking lot of a convenience store in Fanning Springs and took him into custody. During this arrest, additional drug evidence was seized, resulting in more drug charges.


At the time of writing, records show that SPARKS is behind bars at the Levy County Detention Facility.
