Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced that on Monday, December 19, 2022, 27-years-old ELISA SUMNER (pictured), was arraigned on a five-count indictment before the Honorable William T. Little in Albany County Court.
According to a news release, the indictment, handed up by a Grand Jury on December 14, 2022, includes one Class E felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, and four Class A misdemeanor counts of overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals; failure to provide sustenance.
SUMNER is accused of intentionally killing her 2-year-old German Shepherd named Nala, with “no justifiable purpose” at an Albany home on 42 Spring Street between Lark and Dove Streets between August 21, 2022, and August 29, 2022.
Albany Police investigators from the Special Operations Unit, who led the investigation, determined that SUMNER failed to provide proper sustenance and medical care to Nala who was suffering from malnutrition and severe bite wounds to her head and ears. Nala sadly died from the injuries.
The news release also stated, “Additionally, the indictment alleges that at the same address, on October 14, 2022, SUMNER failed to provide proper sustenance for four other dogs, and kept them in a residence covered in urine, feces, and garbage.”
SUMNER was arrested on November 1, 2022, and the Albany County District Attorney's Office said that she was released to the supervision of probation pending her next court date, which has not been yet scheduled. As a condition of SUMNER’s release, she is barred from “owning”, or being in custody of any animals.
