ALICIA DAWN CULBERSON arrested – 44 dogs, including 6 dead ones, found at a Chatham County property

On January 26, 2024, The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 36-years-old ALICIA DAWN CULBERSON (pictured).

 

According to a press release by the sheriff’s office and obtained by Voice For Us, the investigation into CULBERSON began after a citizen expressed concern for the well-being of animals at a property on 1360 Oakley Church Road, Bear Creek. “The Sheriff’s Office was notified of some distressing sounds coming from a large number of dogs around the residence”, stated the release.

 

On Thursday, January 25, 2024, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the aforementioned property. The search led to the discovery of forty-four (44) dogs, including six (6) who were sadly already dead.

 

The live dogs were found with various issues including dehydration, parasites, severe matting, malnutrition, or a combination of multiple health concerns, said the sheriff’s office.

The Voiceless Victims were removed and placed in the care of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office’s Animal Resource Center.

 

CULBERSON was arrested on January 26, 2024, on ten counts of animal cruelty. She is scheduled to appear at Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on January 31, 2024.

 

I emailed the sheriff’s office and requested additional information about the Voiceless Victims but its PIO was unable to disclose further details as the investigation is ongoing.

DAVID LEE SUTTON arrested for shooting a dog who had to be euthanized as a result of the injuries

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 50-years-old DAVID LEE SUTTON (pictured).

 

According to the sheriff’s office, on January 24, 2024, deputies from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Division were dispatched to 1400 E. Twenty-Third Street in Winston-Salem following a report of an injured dog. Upon arrival, they found a dog who was bleeding profusely from his/her mouth.

 

SUTTON, the Voiceless Victim’s guardian, “admitted to physically assaulting the animal” and “claimed to have shot the dog in response to an alleged biting incident”, stated the press release obtained by Voice For Us.

 

Deputies determined that given the severity of the dog’s injuries, “immediate euthanasia was necessary.”

A necropsy was performed on the Voiceless Victim and results showed that he/she sustained “a gunshot wound to the mouth.”

 

As a results of the necropsy report, the sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant which was executed on January 29, 2024. The search led to the recovery of two (2) firearms.

 

SUTTON was arrested and faces one felony count of animal cruelty and two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

 

According to the media release, SUTTON “has been remanded to the Forsyth County Detention Center, where no bond has been allowed.”

 

Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. said in a statement: “We must never forget our pets are a part of our community and we will always treat them as such. Those that violate them, will be charged accordingly. We must never forget how we treat our pets as a community is a reflection of our community. The FCSO has a zero-tolerance stance on animal cruelty.”

 

I emailed the sheriff’s office to inquire about the Voiceless Victim and I was told he/she was a Pitbull mix and I should hear back from the PIO with additional information.

Meanwhile, I took the liberty of naming the furvictim Bijoux for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.

GRACE CHARLENE HORNE accused of leaving animals for weeks without food or water

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said that 24-years-old GRACE CHARLENE HORNE is facing animal cruelty charges following an investigation that was launched in November 2023, after a neighbor reported her concerns to Rowan County Animal Services.

 

On November 21, 2023, Investigator Eric Williams with Rowan County Animal Services responded to a home on 107 Upland Trail in Cleveland to investigate reports of possible animal abandonment.

 

Upon arrival, Investigator Williams found chickens running loose on the property. Looking through a window of the home he then saw three dogs who appeared to be emaciated and one of them was unable to stand up due to the condition he/she was in.

 

Investigator Willimas contacted HORNE, the animals’ guardian, and she met with him at the property. HORNE said no one had been able to care for the animals in about a month.

 

Once inside the home, Investigator Williams found puddles of urine and feces throughout the house.

 

The three dogs were transported to the Rowan County Animal Shelter for medical care.

 

According to a press release by the sheriff’s office and obtained by Voice For Us, on January 12, 2024, the Rowan County District Attorney’s Office asked the sheriff’s office to investigate the case further and the case was assigned to a deputy of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Team (SOCAT). Through the investigation, the deputy was able to speak to the veterinarian that treated the dogs and learned that all three furvictims “were as close as they could be to dying of starvation and still be breathing. “

 

On January 12, 2024, warrants were obtained for HORNE for seven felony counts of animal cruelty and seven misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

The charges refer to the three dogs and the four chickens.

 

The following day, January 13, 2024, the warrants were served and HORNE was arrested. She was taken before a magistrate and released on a written promise to appear in court. 

 

On January 16, 2024, witnesses gave statements to the sheriff’s office stating that they had witnessed “the ill-care of three dogs and chickens on the property and that they would also be making a statement about other animals on the property.”  The witnesses further stated that in the summer of 2023, there were a total of five chickens and three ducks on HORNE’s property.

According to the release, one of the witnesses stated that HORNE was never at home and “the chickens and ducks had no food, and water and that a pool that had been placed out for the ducks had no water in it and that it was [nothing] but sludge.” Additionally, the witness stated that she contacted HORNE to let her know that one of the ducks had died.

 

Although the neighbors started caring for the ducks and chickens, two remaining ducks and one chicken died later, making a total of four animals who passed away.

 

With this new information about the deceased animals, warrants were obtained on January 16, 2024, for four felony counts of Death by Starvation. On the same day, HORNES appeared in court on the new charges and was served with the warrant for Felony Death by Starvation. She was then taken before a District Court Judge on the felony charges. The Judge ordered her not to have any responsibility for animals and then released her on a written promise to appear in court on February 14, 2024.

 

As for the three dogs, they have since been rehabilitated and adopted out to new homes.
