The Pembroke Pines Police Department arrested 40-years-old SHEENA JOVANIA VANDYKE (pictured), after her dog was found lifeless in the backyard of her home.
NBC 6 reports that VANDYKE is “the owner of the popular iKrave, which has a restaurant in Miami's Liberty City and a food truck at PortMiami.”
On Saturday, May 13, 2023, police received an anonymous call about a deceased dog laying in the grass in the backyard of a residence along the 9900 block of Northwest 20th Street.
Upon arrival, in the backyard of the home officers found a lifeless 2-year-old brown French Bulldog, named Frenchie, lying on his right side.
VANDYKE arrived while officials were on the scene. She told them that she had a cleaning crew at her house and, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by Voice For Us, she “placed the dog outside on a leash tethered to a spike so that the company can do what they needed to do.” VANDYKE also told police that “she left food and water outside in the backyard with the dog.”
Officers reported finding food scattered on the grass, an empty, turned over water bowl and no shade for Frenchie.
According to the arrest report, “The dog was left in direct heat and sunlight for hours with no freedom to move about. The dog was attached by a leash from his collar to a stake in the ground. The stake appeared to have been moved due to the dog possibly struggling to free itself.”
The affidavit also stated that “The leash was completely stretched where it appears there was a struggle in an attempt to free itself and find shade or water.”
An officer took Frenchie’s body to Leader Animal Hospital on 9410 Stirling Road where Dr. Jacklyn Denise Johns examined the Voiceless Victim and took X-rays. She then observed "bruises on the neck area, ingesta/vomit in the mouth area as well as blood, rigor mortis, bleeding from the nostril, peeling off the skin from dragging himself, blood coming from the penis, blood on the right eye, and trauma on the neck area."
Dr. Johns advised the officer that Frenchie would be kept in a freezer and sent to the University of Florida for a necropsy.
VANDYKE was arrested on one felony count of animal cruelty and is free on a $5,000 bond.
A friend of VANDYKE’s told NBC 6 that the death of Frenchie was an “accident” and that the cleaning people probably forgot to put him back into the house.
