~ Update: November 13, 2023
The Tyrone Borough Police Department tells me that the white Pitbull was approximately 1 year old and his name was Zero. Police further told me “At this time, we cannot release the report due to the death of Zero being an open investigation. I can tell you however that the dog did not die of natural causes.”
~ Original story:
The Tyrone Borough Police Department arrested 37-years-old ROBERTA KATHRYN EWING (pictured) on two third-degree felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, two third-degree misdemeanor counts of animal neglect, and a third-degree felony endangering the welfare of children.
Police said they were called about a dead white Pitbull at EWING’s home in the 1300 block of Bald Eagle Avenue. The caller said the dog appeared to have his/her neck snapped and his/her ribs were showing. Police were also shown pictures of the deceased Pitbull as well as the deplorable conditions the home was in, littered with trash and animal feces.
According to a criminal complaint, police were familiar with the dog due to previous reports, including one from September 21, 2023, stating that the dog killed a kitten.
Police then spoke to the witnesses who took the photos. Officers learned that when the witnesses were visiting the home, in addition to the dead Pitbull who was laying in a corner of a bedroom, they saw another dog who was barely alive and emaciated to the point his/her ribs and spine were showing and had something oozing from one of his/her eyes.
On Wednesday, November 8, 2023, police executed a search warrant at EWING’s home and a child answered the door.
In the bedroom where the dead Pitbull was found, officers saw a bed covered in feces and the floor was covered with trash to the extent that there was no bare space to step.
The bathtub was also filled with trash and the upper floor of the home was just as bad.
In the basement, on the steps, officers found a deceased cat inside a soda box.
EWING was arrested and then arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Andrew L. Blattenberger. Bond was set at $50,000 but she was unable to post it so she was remanded to the Blair County Prison.
Court records show that a preliminary hearing is slated to take place on the morning of Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. before District Judge Fred B. Miller.
