On the night of Sunday, September 24, 2023, officers with the Evansville Police Department responded to a domestic violence call at a property on Taylor Avenue.

According to the police report obtained by Voice For Us, a woman had called stating “he has been hitting her” then disconnected. Central dispatch reported that number had called in twice and disconnected. The woman was able at one point to report that the male “had been drinking and hurting the dogs as well.”

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the woman outside the residence. She told officers that her husband, 48-years-old JOHN THOMAS KAISER (pictured), had come back home intoxicated from a friend's house and while they were in the living room watching TV, he became angry over a show and began a verbal argument. As Mrs. Kaiser started packing some stuff so she could leave, he started hitting and kicking one of the two dogs, a male Chow Chow named Harry. Despite the horrifying situation Mrs. Kaiser was facing, her priority was the well-being of those Voiceless Victims. As she attempted to get the dogs out of the home, KAISER "shoved her in the kitchen and began hitting her with a closed fist on her face", stated the report.

While Mrs. Kaiser was being beaten, she was able to get the dogs out of the home and put them in her van. Unfortunately, during the altercation, she dropped the keys and KAISER refused to give them to her.

According to the report, Mrs. Kaiser sustained several injuries. "Officers did not observe visible injuries to the dogs; however, they are very long haired canines and it would have been difficult to observe injury", stated the report. Furthermore, both furbabies were "visibly upset" and could not be evaluated by officers on the scene.

The report does not mention whether the dogs were later examined by a veterinarian and the Evansville Police Department does not have this information.

Before officers struggled to handcuff KAISER, he threw a metal dog food/water bowl at the officers. He was extremely uncooperative. Officers also sustained injuries as a result of KAISER's aggressive behavior.

KAISER is charged with animal cruelty, domestic battery and two counts of resisting law enforcement.

The Evansville Police Department arrested 45-years-old CHANTELL SHERI MERIWETHER (pictured) accused of abandoning her dog and leaving him/her tied up to a power box.

Police said they found the dog on August 8, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. outside the CK Newsome Community Center. According to police, the dog had minimal shade, had no food or water, and was barking incessantly.

The furvictim was microchipped a week prior and police were able to identify MERIWETHER as his/her guardian. Furthermore, police obtained security footage and MERIWETHER was first seen at 8:45 a.m. walking with the dog toward CK Newsome Community Center, then, footage showed MERIWETHER walking away from the building about fifteen minutes later without the dog. When the police called MERIWETHER, she refused to answer any questions. She was placed under arrest on Monday, August 28, 2023, and charged with one felony count of animal cruelty. MERIWETHER is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail.

Court records show that MERIWETHER is expected in Vanderburgh County Superior Court on September 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.

Police did not disclose additional information about the Voiceless Victim who was picked up by Animal Control. I have emailed the Evansville Police Department to inquire about the furbaby and if I hear back, I will post an update.

Online court records show that MERIWETHER has a prior conviction for animal cruelty in 2018.

On an unrelated note, MERIWETHER was arrested in August 2019, after police said her grandson, under the age of three, drank alcohol while he was in her care on July 5, 2019, and the amount he consumed sent him to the hospital.

The list of her criminal records goes on and on….

The Evansville Police Department arrested 73-years-old GORDON LEE TERRY (pictured) after he was witnessed dropping his dog several times.

Police said on the early morning of Saturday, May 27, 2023, a witness called after seeing TERRY having trouble standing and falling over multiple times, and picking his dog up and dropping him several times.

Officers responded to the 7000 block of East Walnut Street where the witness told them that she stopped to talk to TERRY and he told her that he was “drunk on some pills.”

The witness told officers that TERRY walked up to the car in the parking lot, dropped his dog onto the pavement, and left. TERRY also left his shoes behind.

Animal control was called in and took custody of the dog.

The furbaby suffered brain damage due to how his body was reacting, and how the pupils looked. He was sadly euthanized.

The Voiceless Victim was microchipped and police were able to track down his guardian, TERRY’s wife. When she was questioned, she confirmed the dog, a 3-year-old Pomeranian mix named Riley, was hers and her husband’s. She told the police her husband had been out looking for Riley after he got loose.

TERRY admitted he knowingly left Riley and that the pair of black shoes officers found at the scene of the incident were his.

TERRY was taken into custody on Saturday, May 27, 2023, and transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail. According to public records, at his initial court appearance, judge Meir set a ridiculous bond of $500 and TERRY was released! The condition of the bond is that “Deft. shall not possess any live animals.”

TERRY is due back in Vanderburgh Superior Court on June 1, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
