On November 29, 2024, Vermont State Police received several calls about a dog who had jumped out of the bed of a moving pickup truck on Interstate 89, Hartford.
In a press release, police identified the furvictim as a 5-year-old German Shepherd named Ace and the driver of the pickup truck as 33-year-old ADAM HOWARD, of Leicester, N.C..
Police said that Ace “was tethered in a way that was detrimental to his welfare.” Ace was improperly leashed in the bed of the pickup truck and slipped out his collar.
The furvictim jumped out of the truck onto the highway and traffic came to a near standstill as motorists attempted to rescue him. Ace was struck by a vehicle in the southbound lane.
While all this was happening, HOWARD kept driving.
A Good Samaritan took Ace to Small Animal Veterinary Emergency and Specialty (SAVES) in Lebanon, N.H. where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
With the description of HOWARD’s truck, police reached out to the community for information in the hope of finding him, and eventually Troopers were able to make contact.
HOWARD claimed that he was unaware that Ace had jumped out.
HOWARD was charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. He was cited to appear in Windsor County Superior Court in Woodstock on December 31, 2024, to face the charges.
